It is easier to define mental illness than mental health. Even though we may not always have seemingly diagnosable mental disorders, it is obvious that one man is different from another in terms of mental health. Some of us are mentally healthier than others.

Mental health is the combination of genetic, biological, psychological and environmental factors. It is the absence of a mental disorder. It involves the ability of an individual to enjoy life and achieve a balance between activities of life and effort in order to achieve the ability to confront stress and adversity in a very calm and serene manner. It is also an expression of emotions, which means a successful adaptation to different demands. A mentally healthy person can work productively and effectively for the community in which he lives.

There is no generally accepted official definition of mental health. Cultural differences, subjective judgments, prevailing customs and conventions, social condition, political and social aspects in which he lives are all crucial to the decision on the question of the reason of one’s own mental structure: that a person is mentally healthy can be determined by certain characteristics.

First, the ability to enjoy life without worrying about the future or thinking about the past is the sure sign of the health of the mind. The secret of life is to see the passing of the present. Sometimes people make themselves unhappy by constantly paying attention to what cannot be healed or what is unpredictable. This is unpleasant for the health of the mind.

Second, the ability to deal with stress or trauma and to repel adversity points to mental health. This quality of resilience is shared by those who can cope effortlessly with the situations of stress.

Thirdly, greater mental health is the result of a balanced lifestyle. In our lives we have to constantly balance a lot of things. For example, we are treated as “loners” when we are unable to strike a balance between time spent socially and time spent alone, as well as between several things such as work and play. Sleep and wakefulness, rest and movement, time at home and time outdoors.

Fourth, emotional and cognitive flexibility is the sign of mental strength. Some people have very rigid views and no discussion can change them. These people suffer from stress for the rigid expectations that they place on themselves. Psychologically healthy people open the feelings and emotions instead of turning them off in the dark chamber of the mind.

Sixth, we all have natural gifts or inner abilities. Some use their potentials, others seem to have destroyed them. Spiritually healthy people are in the process of realizing their potentials.

Seventh, focusing on the issues of concern and discussing them with others is the sign of mental health. Deconstructing the worries that plague you constantly leads to good mental health.

These are just some of the concepts that are important for achieving mental health. In reality, one should be free, flexible, open-minded, positive, energetic and above all optimistic to achieve complete mental health.
